Highway Safety for Emergency Service Personnel

Fire Departments and other Emergency Service Organizations respond to a wide variety of incidents involving operations on, or near a highway. These operations pose special risks to personnel performing fire, rescue, traffic control, and EMS functions. Every year a significant number of emergency service personnel are killed or injured while operating on highways. The following information and resources are provided to assist CSFCA members in understanding the risk to emergency service personnel responding to highway incidents and the measures that can be taken to reduce this risk.

“Firefighters responding to calls need to operate as if someone is trying to run them over.” James Joyce, former Commissioner of the Chicago Fire Department
